Zook - Blue Monday

Oh wow! oh wow! oh wow! No not Meg Ryan doing her bit in When Harry Met Sally but a natural reaction to hearing Zook’s take on the old New Order classic Blue Monday. Audi have teamed up with cutting edge artists from present day to rework classic tracks in their own style and judging by this one the results for the series could be astounding!

Blue Monday didn’t become the biggest selling 12” single ever for nothing. It was because of the almost robotic nature of the drums and bassline that run through it as a constant tied alongside the monotone repetitive vocal. So it’s a brave artist that strips away those features of the song and turns it into a shimmering, smoky longe track, gently plucked acoustic guitar and strings define this version with the spoken word almost whispered vocal easing itself into the track from time to time.

As cover versions go it’s very brave, luckily it’s also brilliant. Check out this and more by clicking on the website link to the right of this review.
