Flipron - Book Of Lies / Mess It Up

I had a Flipron night last Friday with a couple of mates round in my garage to review their latest double A side. For the uninitiated, Flipron have featured on these pages on more than one occasion in the past. They’ve got an energetic new single in “Book Of Lies”, which, if you’re already a fan will be exactly what you are after; within the first couple of minutes me and my guests had agreed it ‘sounds like Flipron.’

If you’ve never heard them before my mate’s girlfriend said ‘they sound like Space’ (Female of the Species, remember that one?), and I suppose there is a bit of a similarity vocally. Musically, however they’re catchy and clever with multi layered tracks that keep the toes tapping. The second of the singles, “Mess It Up” features an electric sitar complemented nicely by some plinky piano work.

The two singles have been produced by Rat Scabies (drummer for the Damned) who also features on cymbals on track two – and a jolly good job of it he’s done too. Having said this, I’ve never had any cause for complaint with previous recordings and the quality of their production, and there’s a bonus third track on this single (“The Uses Of Superstition”) produced by the band alone which sounds just as good.

We’re all now looking forward to October when the new album “Gravity Calling” will be released. You’ll get a full review of that when it arrives. This band is clever, a bit different and definitely worth adding to your music collection.

FLIPRON? APPROVED.
