The Hold Steady - Boys And Girls In America
The Hold Steady have been getting a lot of very good press in the UK for this their third album in as many years. For me though it all just sounds like it’s been done before.
The album is based around one line (the title) and has been taken as a concept from their. It’s full of tales of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll in just about every song on this album…don’t get me wrong i’m sure that all three themes play a large part in most young Americans lives, but come on give us a break here!
The lyrics would probably have got away with it for me if it hadn’t sounded like the last 20 years of American rock music screwed into a ball together and then rolled back out by hand. Craig Finn is the vocalist fronting the band and it’s with him I have the biggest problem, I just find that his voice grates so badly with me when I listen to them.
The album is out now through Vagrant Records.
