Sonny J - Disastro
Swapping turntables for the production studio Sonny J delivers Disastro, a record that leaves you feeling a little dizzy after listening to it, similar to being on a rollercoaster, it’s thrilling, exciting, slightly unsettling, come the end of the journey you’ve enjoyed it but you aren’t altogether sure why.
I think this really stems from the fact that listening to this album kind of gives you the feeling as though you are listening to someone constantly skipping radio stations. The songs all sit so far apart in styles that you don’t really build up a gead of steam as far as ‘getting into it’ goes.
It opens with a track that sounds like The Go! Team if they were made up of French school girls, features some really soulful tracks, like Handsfree (If you Hold My Hand) which is a really good example of what a great pop record this could have been with a bit more cohesion, but also has some really jumbled moments like I’m So Heavy, Belly Bongo and Cabaret Short Circuit.
