Gramercy - Hold On

Well hopefully by now you’ll be familiar with this track as the video for Hold On has been in our downloads section for a good couple of weeks.

If you haven’t heard it yet then here is the low down on the track and the group. Gramercy are Crispin Hunt, the former Longpigs frontman, Nigel Hoyle who was the main man in Gay Dad and Dylan Rippon, who has released material under various guises as well as producing Emma Townsends debut album in 1998.

So throw all that into the mix and what would you expect? Yep you’d expect a three and a half minute Brit pop effort of fairly cringeworthy proportions as the try to relive past glories. Life doesn’t always throw up what you expect though does it, instead what you have here is a glorious Fleetwood Mac Rumours era track. It’s all held together by the emotive, pleaing refrain “How can we hold on if we ain’t got each other to hold on to”.

It does veer slightly towards the middle of the road Americana that the Eagles made a career out of, strangely though it really does work. The two b-sides are both good as well, Possibilities is a tender song that Hunt turns in a great vocal performance on, while Please Don’t Lie is a simple stripped down song with a nice melody.

So a promising start from Gramercy, if they can continue to surprise us with future releases then we might have a new reference point for all of them as opposed to being known for what they used to do.

The single is released on the 18th July, we should hopefully have an interview as well in the next couple of weeks with the band.

The single isn’t out this week now as it’s been put back to Sept due to them signing a major label deal. Interview to follow around the time of the single as well.

Kev,

Any news on the Gramercy front?  I heard from someone that nothing will be coming out until January ‘06 at the earliest.  Do you have any further details?

Yep it’s looking like January at the earliest, not a bad time to launch a new band though with single sales down that month usually so it would make sense.

Anyone know what’s going on with Gramercy...are they still active? Can you get their material anywhere?
