Make It Better Later - Headlines And Lies
The band was formed in November 2005 and describes the music as a curious mix of ska, violin and punk. This intrigued me so was quite keen to review.
The A side Headlines and Lies has a lovely into with violins and vocals at the speed of concord, however quickly into the track the tempo/style changes to what I think was the ska influence. At this point, the track lost its appeal for me, either one or the other (ska or punk) with the violin would have been fine but the two just didn’t work for me. However on a plus point the guitar and drum sections were pretty good.
The B-side The Pirate Song is apparently a real crowd pleaser for fans of the band. It initially reminded me of something you might hear on a children’s channel (Disney, CITV etc) The style was less confused than the A side. But I cant see why it was necessary to put on the fake pirate accent to sing the song, it has a bold feeling which I felt went ok with the punk side of the band but the annoying singing got on my nerves.
An extra track was Soul Train, starts with a bit of comedy talk over was definitely ska influenced, had great vocal and the most disappointing thing about this track was its length, it just wasn’t long enough, definitely my favourite track.
