The Beat Surrender

Kat Vipers was born in Athens to a family of pianist and singers, classically trained from the age of four and her last EP was funded by the Arts Council of England. Her style has been discribed as gypsy blues, futuristic jazz punk and electro.

Hot Air Balloon hits you between the eyes its a wonderful blend of punk and blues thrown together resulting in an opera of sound, a modern day classic. Just Like Jerry Lee is a fast paced track with great keyboard a mix of rock/blues which almost comes across like a track from a West End musical.

Wasting Time rattles along at a startling pace despite a nice loose oboe part lilting away. The school choir provide vocal accompaniment lifting this track to a different level. Get A New Dog Blues is much quieter, very blues influenced, but again has the qualities I would normally associte with a musical, it’s a little slow and drawn out for me but very well perfomed.

Last track is This Is Now, the longest track on the EP, it starts with a lovely keyboard intro, soft breathy vocals build gentley, this track has a totally different feel, much more meloncholy and to be truthful for me much more in keeping with the singers vocals. The earlier tracks were a little confused and seemed like the music and vocals were in some sort of competition to see just who could get to the finish line making the most noise.

This is not to my own personal taste and may be just a little off the wall for many others, no doubt Kat Vipers has masses of talent, is a great artist and has the potential to go much further just not sure the markets ready for this yet.
