Cobra Starship - Hot Mess
I’ve never quite understood the point of a band like Cobra Starship, it’s almost like they are a genetically modified Fueled By Ramen product. Taking elements of the other artists on the label and packaging it into a group of pretty things that make dull, uninspiring music for the mass teen market who dress in black and kinda like skateboarding.
Oh wait, now I see the point, it’s to make the label shit loads of easy money isn’t it. Yep that’ll be it.
Anyway they are here with a new album that is called Hot Mess and it features the horrible single Good Girls Go Bad, which features the delightful (but surplus to requirements here) Leighton Meester for some reason. On that basis I did expect the album to be a complete disaster.
As it turns out it’s actually just piss poor, which is a step in the right direction for the band. On Fold Your Hands Child they have a good track lyrically that steps out of their formulaic music and shows promise that they could yet deliver something half decent. Likewise A couple of the later tracks on the album like The World Will Never Do and Living In The Sky With Diamonds had me humming along at points (I was out of tune of course).
Unfortunately though they don’t nearly enough of this and instead reduce most tracks to infantile lyrics, music that sounds like it a Fallout Boy b-side and that’s not godd in anyones book.
