Noblesse Oblige - In Exile
Noblesse Oblige are a European duo comprising Sebastian Lee Philipp and Valerie Renay, who formed in 2004 and two years later, released their album Privilege Entails Responsibility. Having formed in London they have since relocated to Berlin.
The album as a whole is pretty good, Renay has delivered some really good vocals here and musically the backdrop behind those are brilliant, World Music comes to the fore through the use of instruments like the bongos, samples from an African tribe and Latin strings. In fact even as instrumental album this would have enough about it to work in it’s own right.
The one thing that does let it down in places is where Philipp gets involved in the vocals, his voice has nowhere near the quality of his partners and this results in it taking away from the music. The only exception to that is the album closer Under The Floorboard an oi! punk shouter that works really well.
In Exile is out now through Repo Records.
