Travis - J. Smith EP

Travis are strangely choosing to make a low key return with what is in truth a slightly overblown song, which all seems a bit of a messy contradiction to me.

J. Smith is the first single from the forthcoming Ode To J Smith album and they’ve opted for a download and limited 10” single release only. Which is all well and good but they’ve described this single as a three minute rock opera, have drafted in The Crouch End Festival Chorus to add more scale, so you would have thought they would have wanted maximum exposure for it.

The song itself is a little bit of a muddle for me, it’s ambitious to try and cram everything into three minutes, but the end result is that the song seems flighty, never really settling and not giving you anything to cling onto.

Get Up is also on the EP and thats a less rocky affair, but equally forgettable, the best track was the simplest song of the three. Sarah is a stripped back number that actually has some feeling in it, making it the best on here by a mile.
