Ayo - Joyful
Joyful is the brilliant album by Ayo the daughter of a Nigerian father and Romanian Gypsy mother and boy does it show as she weaves a magical variance of inspirations and world music influences throughout it.
Along with the Joy Denalane album it’s the best soul album i’ve heard this year, she has a stunning vocal, which has echoes of both Lauryn Hill and Tracy Chapman in it, musically she covers everything from African folk, reggae and of course oodles of soul. Down On My Knees opens the album (and was a recent single), a couple of listens to this and you too may be bowing to Ayo.
A wonderful talent and a brilliant example of modern soul with a twist of world music.
