Phoenix - Long Distance Call
This summer shall be one to tell the grandkids about, and no, it’s got nothing to do with Germany. The hipper-than-thou Parisians Phoenix have come out of hibernation and bestowed on us yet another slice of uber-cool, sophisticated, genre eluding summer time pop, and well, the thought alone is enough to make you take off those outer layers and dream that you own a convertible and live in a warmer climate.
Long Distance Call is typically understated, maintaining the subtle disco vibes of yore, but upping the urgency with indie rock guitar riffs and a driving chorus almost reminiscent of Casablancas and co. It is possible to float away on the wistfulness of a bands aesthetic, but here’s hoping that the forthcoming LP It’s Never Been Like That is consistent enough to finally generate the attention Phoenix so overwhelmingly deserve, as possibly the best pop-band in the world.
