Martin Grech - Guiltless
Now then, this is an odd ‘un. I can’t say for definite, but this guy could well be singing through an unzipped gimp mask. So far I’ve not worked out what the song is about, but I’m sure it’s not pleasant. Imagine being tied to a chair with a psychotic nutter whispering in your ear while he plays with himself – this is the sort of sound Grech achieves with this track. I may be completely wrong, it may be supposed to be a love song, but if so, I feel sorry for his partner.
Grech has got a light voice which goes well with the song, as it adds to the atmosphere. The music is quite experimental, especially on the album version of the song; it’s quite off beat at times rather than your usual basic four/four time repetitive power chordage. There’s also a shorter ‘radio edit’ version of the track – although I don’t know which station would play it.
One criticism I’d have to make is that the sound balance is a bit poor for headphones; I had to keep turning it up and down and again when the music kicked in. May just be my CD player, though. I’m now keen to hear the album to see what the rest of Grech’s work is like.
