Battles - Mirrored

Battles are a little bit of a mystery to me having listened to Mirrored three times, i’m still none the wiser what they were trying to achieve and how they’ve gone about producing this album.

They have said they are quite an organic band that are forever compsing, even when they are on stage together the songs are built into a multi layered track, sometimes from scratch unrehearsed at other times melded together with hours of practice between them.

Listening to the album it sounds directionless, the music is at times extremely messy at the very best it’s avant garde and they just about get away with it. They try to fuse elements of jazz with an indie heavy twisted wall of sound, very occasionally like Atlas they produce a very good track, it just doesn’t happen enough for me.

The album is out now through Warp, Battles have just finished the Uk leg of their tour.
