Alabama 3 - M.O.R.

Alabama 3 are a strange breed of a band. In the scheme of things they don’t seem to be one of the bigger bands around in the UK, yet when your music is synonymous with one of the greatest TV shows ever (The Sopranos), has been featured on another TV show that could easily claim that crown (The Simpsons) and you have celebrity fans as diverse as Irvine Welsh and Stephen King you are hardly small fry either.

Alabama 3 are a band that have managed to stay around for over ten years now though and they’ve done that by finding their sound, twaeking it from album to album and consistently coming up with good music. The latest album M.O.R. is another example of this, it features a heady brew of sounds, from their traditional blues and country to slightly less successful but still listenable tracks that are nearer to reggae and rap.

Sprinkle in a number of guests on the album as well as you see The Proclaimers pop up along with people like The Lenin Of Love and MC Pablo and it gives you a real feel for how diverse it is as an album. The diversity does sometimes hinder the flow of the album, but that is offset for me by the quality of the musicianship on display.

Probably not a landmark album for them and it certainly isn’t the strongest record they’ve done, but it shows they aren’t about to rest on their laurels just yet either. M.O.R. is out now through One Little Indian.
