Sally Night - Phases Of Love

I have to say that the sleeve design on this one doesn’t give you any indication of what lays await inside, I had a horrible feeling that it was going to be a Celine Dion style singer, so it was a pleasant surprise when I put the CD into my discman at work today and jazz piano greeted me.

It turns out that Sally Night is a jazz singer and from the fourteen tracks here on Phases Of Love, she’s a pretty good one at that. My two main gripes with this album aren’t really anything to do with her ability as such, which certainly isn’t in question.

The first issue is that its an album of jazz standards with no clue given as to her own songwriting ability, we have plenty of people who can belt out a jazz standard do we really need another? The second issue is that it doesn’t change in pace enough for me, it’s supposed to be a journey through the different stages of love, but it’s left to the lyrics to do that rather than the music, where for me it should go hand in hand.

A talent definitely, be we need to see more of her if we are going to be able to judge her against her peers.
