Rufus Wainwright - Rufus! Rufus! Rufus! Does Judy! Judy! Judy!

It was a natural progression for Rufus Wainwright to move onto Judy Garland songs, apart from the obvious reason, he also happens to have the voice to pull off the songs and their vast range of emotions that were covered in her 1961 Carniege Hall show.

The show is recreated in full here and Wainwright vocally nails the lot, his sister comes on for an equally impressive turn on Stormy Weather and for a few songs he’s also joined by his Mum and then Judy Garlands daughter. This though is the plus points pointed out, for me the DVD lets itself down with too many camera shots of the crowd as they pick out the vast array of celebrities in attendance and the editing leaves a little bit to be desired.

For all his talent he also doesn’t seem too comfortable in front of such a vast crowd, as I said before his vocals do enough to send a crowd home satisfied but he’s not the showman you’d like him to be on this evidence.
