The Decoys - Songs About A Girl

This band come from Worthing in Surrey and used to be called K2 (hence the myspace site name). The biog states they won the Miller unsigned battle of the bands in 2004, following this they released Hello Monday, which received lots of coverage, being played on many national radio stations. Nothing much seemed to come from this success, however they obviously have staying power and three years later are back with a different name and a new album.

Torn Up has a great chorus with racing drum beat complimented by the simple lyrics, this track bounces along, didn’t have the feel of a single but not a bad opener to the album. Song About A Girl, the title track is more of indie single, good guitars, lovely lyrics and a chorus you would remember. Could see this being released soon as a single (if it hasn’t already been) can imagine this is a good live track.

She Wont Wait, not to dissimilar, vocals change a little, seemed a bit strained in parts, but then dropped down a note. At this point, I could have been listening to Paul Weller in his Jam days. I needed to listen to this track a few times to fully appreciate. All The Time, has a fast drum beat, vocals a little weak to start but then got stronger, this wasn’t the most exciting track, however I bet this is a track to hear live when they will really be able to let rip with the guitars. You and You Alone was the last track, started like a good anthemic indie track should do, great lyrics, meaningful and heartfelt, great guitar strumming along in the background, another one to consider for a single perhaps?

What I liked the most about this was that the lyrics made sense, perhaps i’ve been listening to Kaiser Chiefs too much lately (Ruby does not make sense at all) The Decoys seem to have spent the time away perfecting the song writing and performing. I really really liked this and it was a great shame I was only reviewing a 5-track promo, as it’s hard to say if this is the best to expect or if this is a random five track. Perhaps what I need to do is put my hand in my pocket and by the full album, perhaps I will.
