No Machine - Tell Me EP

Opening track A Terrible Thing puzzled me, it took a while to put my finger on just what was wrong. The music and vocals didn’t seem to go together. It was like one person had written the lyrics and sung them and another had written the music but they weren’t in sync.

I Choose You was unfortunately more of the same, but this time the words just didn’t seem to flow either. I struggled to find out much information but think that the band is made up of musicians from an assortment of European countries. Next track is Tell Me, which is also the forthcoming single release (8th October) this was a slight improvement on the first two tracks but is still pretty awful. Last track is Diamond Ring, nice intro making good use of keyboards, vocals now actually sound European, which wasn’t a bad thing. This track almost sounded good, the use of the synth was evident and this perhaps was the only redeeming feature of the EP.

While not really my cup of tea, I can see this having an audience while the earlier tracks just didn’t sound right. Not sure, what the change was whether it was a change in vocalist or writer I don’t know, it didn’t help that the web page isn’t working and not much info with the promotional cd’s.

No Machine sound a little like they are trying too hard to sound like someone else, no really sure who but the vocals don’t sound natural, very strained. Not sure who this would appeal to unless your into heavy metal minus the heavy sound. If this sounds strange, you should really listen to them, very orchestral, almost classical vocals with what sounded like a choir as backing singers but with influences of Iron Maiden or Marillion. Just too strange for me.
