Butcher Boy - The Eighteenth Emergency EP

Butcher Boy have been favourably compared to Arab Strap and Belle And Sebastian in the past, I had to say I was sceptical as just about everybody from Glasgow seems to get compared to these two bands.

The comparisons though aren’t too far off the mark this time, they have the intensity of Arab Strap and the glorious songwriting ability and slightly geeky charm of Belle And Sebastian. The lead track here The Eighteenth Emergency is beautifully crafted and evokes memories of The Tindersticks for me, not sure if thats because of the Cello and Piano that makes up the music on this track or not, but either way it’s a brooding masterpiece of a song.

Even the b-sides have something to keep your interest throughout the EP, There Is No-One Who Can Tell You Where You’ve Been is a salsa inspired Spaghetti Western track, React Or Die is a frank and sparse track while Keep Your Powder Dry is a compelling finish to a very good EP.
