Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid - The Exchange Session Vol 1

Kieran Hebden takes a rest from his Four Tet monicker to team up with Steve Reid on this three track mini album, with what has to be said are mixed results.

Reid is the American jazz/funk drummer who has worked with Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and James Brown previously. while Hebden has forged a well deserved reputation and following in the Electronica field over recent years with albums such as Everything Ecstatic and Rounds.

The Exchange Session Volume 1 is basically a 36 minute studio jam between the two musicians and that ultimately is where it falls down. You get the jarring and grating of electronic white noise meeting head on the equally free flowing jazz percussion, it’s a mish mash of sounds and lacks the rigidity and structure, resulting in an extremely challenging rather than pleasant listen.

The Exchange Session Volume 1 is out now through Domino Records.

It could all be so simple, but you'd rather make it hard, loving you is like a battle and we both end up with scars. -- Lauryn Hill
