Karine Polwart - This Eartly Spell

Karine Polwart is a Scottish folk singer who if i’m being honest i’d never heard of before. She shouldn’t be too disconcerted by that fact though as Scottish folk isn’t something that I would call myself hugely knowledgeable on!

This Eartly Spell is her third original album and follows on from last years traditional foilk covers album. It’s difficult for me to compare having not heard anything else by her and not a great deal in this genre, for the most part though I stayed with this album which is a big plus point, it’s only really when she puts a little too much celtic edge into things that I found myself drifting.

Nice voice if ultimately unremarkeable, in a way you could say the same thing about the music as well, the main selling point of this album for me though is the lyrics which run deep and personal to her and are excellently constructed.
