Caplyn - Underdogs EP

The North East of England seems to be going through something of a cultural revolution recently, having been famed for The Mac Lads and Lindasfarne previously they’ve hit us with Maximo Park and The Futureheads in the last twelve months.

Attempting to emulate their success are Caplyn. Formed last year, they have already released one EP called The Walk Back Alone. The Underdogs EP is the bands follow up to that and features five tracks, including My Desert Mind that has been included on the soundtrack to the film In A Mans World.

Caplyn do seem a very accomplished band, they play tightly and the singer delivers his slightly off beat vocals with a real confidence. The problem I have with this EP is that it all sounds so familiar, it’s not different enough to stand out from the crowd, which if you are going to ‘make it’ is something you need to do.

That said it’s early days in the bands career, they clearly have a goodwork ethic and I imagine they’d be a good live act, so maybe too soon to write them off just yet.
