The Beat Surrender

This band might as well be sack one of their members right now. There is absolutely no point in paying for the vocalist, all he provides is some faint – and I mean faint – wheezing in the background. Perhaps he’s in the band to carry the gear around and he’s a bit asthmatic, I don’t know. This pathetic rasp is provided by “Edd on Vox” and “Chaos Pad” which is obviously switched from ‘chaos’ to ‘shite’ mode. It may just be the mix on the CD – if that’s the case, then they want to get back in the studio before handing more copies out.

Musically, I’d like to see if the band are this tight live; there’s an awful lot of stop/starting from the guitars – call this disjointed, call it “Jazz Fusion”, I’ve even heard the term “Math Metal” applied – which just made me want to go out and hit somebody. Math Metal? That’s nothing, I had some “Geography Rock” and a bit of the old “Food Tech Blues” on the other night. Math metal, I ask you. Just because they sound like a fax machine does not merit setting up a whole new genre with a stupid name for them.

There is no particular stand out track on this E.P. except maybe for Track 4, “Gobo” which starts off with a decent enough rhythm. Then it all falls apart, sounds like all the others and disappears right up it’s own arse. I’m just glad I didn’t have to sit through a full album of this self indulgent garbage.

Oh, and they wear masks as well. That’s new and original, isn’t it?
