dEUS - Vantage Point
I first stumbled across dEUS when I was at University back in the mid 90’s, I can’t remember the exact date, the venue or who they were supporting, all I remember is that it was around the time of Suds & Soda and it might well have been Sleeper that were headlining somewhere in London.
I remember these Belgiums ambling onto the stage and then not exactly blowing us away, not boring us, just kind of leaving us quite entertained and a little bit intruiged. Since then i’ve kept a watchful eye on how they’ve developed over the years, they have though never particularly dazzled me, always seeming to fall short of making that album that could define them in years to come.
Until now.
I say that because if it holds up as well in a few months time and I haven’t got sick of playing it then Vantage Point could be the album that dEUS are remembered for. It’s certainly the best album they’ve done, confident slightly awkward indie-rock with some real touches of beauty and brilliance in it. The two tracks they’ve done with Karin Anderson and Guy Garvey are also real bonuses.
A very good album and one that will be making it’s way into the top end of many a end of year poll I would wager.
