Catherine Maclellan - Water In The Ground

I reviewed the last Catherine MacLellan album Church Bell Blues (her second release) and couldn’t say that I was particularly blown away by it, despite a beautiful vocal performance from her, the songs just didn’t draw you back in.

Back with a new album in the shape of Water In The Ground, the Canadian folkstress seems to have rectified the one gripe I had about her last album, this set of songs maintains the haunting and at times fragile nature of the last album, but the songs are laced with hooks and melody that really lift the tracks.

My favourite on here is the opening track Take A Break, it’s a brilliant track that showcases everytthing that MacLellan is about and with additional backing vocals adding to the track as well, it’s a terrific opening that sets the tone for the rest of the album to follow.

As an added bonus when you buy the physical release, you also get a bonus disc with it that has her debut album Dark Dream Midnight on, one that has only been available through mail order so far.
