Fireworks Night – One Winter, One Spring
How fitting the night after Bonfire Night (Editor - yes i'm a bit late getting this up) that i'm reviewing this, but that’s where the comparisons end, there aint no sonnet about good old Uncle Guy and his plans to make us all Catholics.
But what we do get is something quite special, with the opener Settle Down being a very gentle piece thrown over the beautiful sounds of a violins and viola’s that go agonisingly well with the James Leslies voice, which falls into the category of Tindersticks Stuart Staples, in that it sounds odd as fuck, but as beautiful as a clear night sky.
This is carried on Across the Sea, which is more like a childs narrated story, crafted elegantly, it’s a fitting autumn song that would be enjoyed by oneself as its not very uplifting, but painfully gloomy... in a good way and a Little Time in the Light being very similar.
In truth though, a lot of the album is based on the same speed, which it aint a bad thing, you couldn’t imagine a full rock sound or fuzzy guitars, this is very much an experience to digest if you appreciate the finer things in life, the little sounds, the strings, the whispering and the heartbreak.
