Brit Awards 2007
I haven’t watched a Brit Awards show for years; possibly the last one I saw was the Jacko and Jarvis one which still has to go down as one of the greatest ever TV moments! Yet here I was having just returned from my Valentines meal, sat in front of the TV waiting to watch the first ‘live’ show for about 18 years.
First up was the flamboyant Scissor Sisters who in fairness to them have always been very good live performers, their shows have always involved colour and movement a plenty, tonight was no different as they used puppets to give them fake legs.
Things were off to a good start, but this was soon to be dragged down into a sea of mediocrity as Snow Patrol meandered through Chasing Cars, Take That gave us a painful performance of Patience (later voted best British single!), Red Hot Chili Peppers went through the motions and The Killers although good in performance, don’t have the same excitement about them these days as they used to.
It was left to two female performers to lift the show, Amy Winehouse (pictured) with a mesmerising run through of her big hit single Rehab and Corine Bailey-Rae who made me proud of her with a sneakily placed LUFC piece of graffiti on the wall she had as a backdrop.
When it comes to the actual awards I always find the Brits very disappointing, yes some good bands got nominated and won awards but there is an air of predictability about them that has only really seen one shock in all the years I’ve been watching it (anyone remember Belle & Sebastians fantastic win?).
Everything feels just a little safe and sanitised now with this whole show, the nearest it gets to risqué is when Russell Brand chips in with his inappropriate jokes between the gong giving. Looking at the list of winners it’s hardly moved away from the mainstream at all, Muse, Fratellis, James Morrison, Arctic Monkeys and Take That. All are as likely to be heard on Radio 2 and VH1 as they are on Radio 1.
The final nail in the Brits ‘07 coffin came from the final award winners at Earls Court, Oasis were given the lifetime achievement award for one great album, one pretty good but flawed album and a near decade of average underachievement. To compound things still further they then played a three song set that saw them going through the motions and sounding as bad as I’ve ever heard them. If that’s what they sound like straight then they need a trip to their dealer asap.

Add to favouritesSo all in all a bit of a damp squid return for the ‘live’ Brit Awards, how live it was is open to debate as the sound problems you heard throughout the event were apparently to block out obscenities, how you know someone is going to swear when it’s live is beyond me. I think they need to look at the current format and try to find ways to diversify the acts and the nominees, the whole program was centred around a number of acts who received multiple nominations.
Despite all that I can probably say there will be every chance that no matter what they do with it, I’ll still be sat here watching and whingeing next year as well!
