Could Eurovision Be Good?
Could Eurovision be good? I know what you are thinking but think about this for a minute and suspend all common sense and put those prejudices to one side…could it actually be good?
We are just 61 days and counting now until the 53rd Eurovision song contest and I can tell you now it’s going to be as dire as ever, Britain as is the way recently due to politics and the actual dubious entries we’ve put in will not win it again, it will be a cheese feast the likes of which you’d normally have to visit Pizza Hut for.
This time though the various countries will be sending their talentless wannabees off to Belgrade and shock horror…could it be that change is afoot?
The answer is yes potentially and I want to cling on to that hope for a few minutes at least, so bear with me will you. You see of all the countries that I expected could be the potential saviours of the Eurovision Song Contest, I wouldn’t have put France at the top of the list, but it seems our garlic munching chums from across the Channel may yet be musical knights in shining armour.
When France announces it’s eurovision entry it’s seldom news in France, never mind in any other country. This year though is different as they proudly unveiled Sebastien Tellier as their entry, with the track Divine. The key word in that last sentence is ‘proudly’, when was the last time Britain entered someone we were proud of?
It’s probably going back to the 70’s i’d guess and even then it was proudly pop, not straight up proud. You see the French have stolen a march on everyone with Tellier, even if he doesn’t go on to win it, they’ve picked a very cool artist, well respected and renowned for some fine music (even if that isn’t consistently so). I haven’t heard it yet but if Divine is one tenth as good as La Ritournelle then it will be the best entry by a mile.
And why couldn’t other countries follow suit? Instead of this being an annual event where Terry Wogan gets to look slightly cool by making some sardonic remarks, it could actually be a genuine music contest that is enjoyed by people who love music, not by people who see it as ironic comedy.

How cool would that be and if every country sent the very best they had to offer how much of a decent spectacle could it become.
It won’t happen i’m sure, but what a revolution it would be… a music competition for musical talent, watched by people who care about music and want to have a bit of national pride in something we actually do excel at…so yes that does mean we don’t import people to compete for us again like Katrina And The Waves and Gina G, we’ve more than enough talent in the UK without needing to do that and they were crap anyway.
Would you watch it if that was the case?...I know I would and I know that come the night i’ll be rooting for Sebastien Tellier, it really could be the start of something good and it’s not often you can say that with Eurovision in the same sentence.
