Mercury Music Prize Nominations 2007
The Mercury Music Prize nominations are always one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year as the list is usually jam packed with quality albums and of course the odd surprise or lesser known act battling out with the big guns.
This year is no different the twelve albums nominated for the £20,000 prize are again an eclectic bunch with two artists nominated in with a chance of making history. The Artic Monkeys (pictured above) could become the first act to win the award twice in consecutive years with their album Favourite Worst Nightmare, Dizzee Rascal is also a second time nominee for Maths and English. He won the prize in 2003 for his debut album Boy In Da Corner and is again nominated, no artist has so far won the award more than once.
Other nominees include:
Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford (Basquiat Strings)
Bats for Lashes (Fur and Gold)
Fionn Regan (End Of History)
Jamie T (Panic Prevention)
Klaxons (Myths of the Near Future)
Maps (We Can Create)
New Young Pony Club (Fantastic Playroom)
The View (Hats Off To The Buskers)
The Young Knives (Voices of Animals And Men)
The Arctic Monkeys and Amy Winehouse have been installed as equal favourites so far at 4/1, this award though to be on is a little bit like the Grand National in that odds mean little and anybody really is in with a chance. That said if I was going to have a bet I think i’d be sticking my money on Bats For Lashes at 10/1 and Jamie T who is at 8/1, both very different albums but two of my favourites from last year.
