Dananananaykroyd

Dananananaykroyd have one of the daftest names in music and with the competition they face in that respect, it really is some claim, I can justify that statement though because any name that when typing into google you have to count and think about surely isn’t a good thing. Putting the name aside though they are a band that could really burst out into the open this year with the release of their forthcoming debut album, Hey Everyone! released on 6th April.

The album is proceeded by the single Black Wax which came out this wek and the band are currently in America for the annual SXSW get together. We caught up with Paul from the band just prior to them jetting off to find out if they were looking forward to the event and also what the rest of the year has in store for them.

You are about to jet off to SXSW, what are you looking forward to the most about the event?

Paul – I’m still laughing at the fact that we’re on the same bill as The Proclaimers! The whole trip is going to be tremendous. We are going to SLAY SXSW.

I’m guessing there are downsides as well that you could do without?

Paul – Nope, how could anyone moan about getting to fly to America to play four exciting shows at what’s probably one of the biggest events in music? I know people who would cut their dick off to have the opportunity to do this!

This won’t be your only foreign excursion this year though, you’ve also lined up a few foreign festivals in the summer as well?

Paul – Yep, we’re hitting Slovakia! Never in my entire life did I expect to play a festival in Slovakia. We’re planning on playing as many festivals as possible in as many countries as possible this summer. We’re also going to Japan which will be a lifetime’s ambition realised for most of the band.

What do you think the crowds abroad will make of you?

Paul – Well we’ve just spent a month playing to audiences all over Europe and it’s fair to say we pinned them into submission. The Portuguese really know how to party. I think America is going to be petrified for the first five minutes before ditching their inhibitions and getting nice and sweaty with us. Do it!

I see you’ve got the Twitter bug, how do you decide who does the updates on that?

Paul – Laura has been the Twitter queen most of the time. She’s really embraced it, though everyone pitches in with the Twitter and of course, our stupid blog.

Likewise with 6 of you in the band, do you ever have problems in agreeing on decisions impacting on the band?

Paul – We’re all very strong-willed, opinionated people but fortunately we tend to agree on most things.

You’ve played with a lot of fairly established bands over the last few years, who have been the best and worst that you’ve played with?

Paul – I’m not going to badmouth any bands, so I’ll stick to the best ones – Foals (amazing band, really lovely guys), Holy Fuck (same again!) and, of course, our new friends Kaiser Chiefs who are absolute dudes.
We’ve also played with some excellent ‘smaller’ bands like Dutch Uncles and Favours For Sailors who, incidentally, we’re taking on tour in March and April.

Your album Hey Everyone is released on the 6th April, for anyone who hasn’t heard you so far what can they expect if they buy the album?

Paul – It sets the benchmark for happiness. We are all really pleased with it. The guitars are beasting, the drums are thunderous and the vocals are ripping. It’s the perfect blend of all-or-nothing scrapey rock and pop.

It’s your debut album of course, is it everything you wanted it to be or did you have to hold back on any ideas you had, I’d imagine you had so many floating around between you all?

Paul – The whole recording process was quite disciplined. Our producer, Machine, made sure no stone was left unturned. Fortunately we’d played most of the songs so many times, they were embedded in our skulls. I think it’s a really strong debut – as close to how we REALLY sound as we’ve come so far in our short, yet checkered careers!

Have your say...
