Japanese Voyeurs

They may have missed out on the golden age of grunge, but that hasn’t stopped Japanese Voyuers from making a mighty fine grunge racket on both the live front and with their Sicking and Creaminmg EP that came out last year.

We put some questions to the band at the turn of the year as they look forward to a double a-side release of That Love Sound and Blush as well as their current tour which has the following dates left on it…

Wednesday 27 Jan – Brighton Audio
Thursday 28 Jan – Stoke Sugarmill
Friday 29 Jan – Crewe The Box
Saturday 30 Jan – Wakefield Escobar
Sunday 31 Jan -Nottingham Bodega

The questions were answered by Romily Alice (RA) and briefly Rich Waldren (RW) Tom Lamb (TL) and Johnny Seymour (JS)...

How has 2009 been for you personally as a group?

RA: Good. lots of rehearsing and getting ready for touring and playing live. It’s kind of been the year we spent crawling out of our cocoon. Feels nice to be out in the real world though

You had your Sicking and Creaming EP out recently, how was the reaction to it?

RA: Mixed! some people thought it was the devils music. we’re with them.

Was the recording and releasing process everything you expected it to be?

RA: We recorded the songs as demos so it was kind of unexpected to be able to put them out. who knew there was so much work that goes into making a record- even just an ep. Its wild.

Your next release is a double a-side, can you tell us a bit more about the two tracks please?

RA: That Love Sound is our most vulnerable song. Its quite schizophrenic, going from very quiet to really insane loud. its pretty emotional, I don’t usually write such personal exposed lyrics but it feels cathartic to sing which is always a good thing. Blush is the opposite, really wild and heavy. I like the idea of having both songs on the same release because it shows two different sides of us as a band.

As well as the single you are also heading back out on tour, what differences will there be in comparison to your shows with Johnny Foreigner recently?

JS: The main thing is that we’ll be headlining for the first time. There’s a bit more pressure playing last but its nice having local bands supporting.

You have a heavy grunge influence in your sound, do you regret not being around as a band in the heyday of grunge in the early 90’s?

RA: Yes. when time travel is invented I’m going back there.

Which particular bands have influenced you and do you all agree on the influences?

TL: Soundgarden, QOTSA, Alice In Chains, Down, Nirvana and Kyuss.

What have been your album highlights of 2009?

RW: Part Chimp: Thriller

RA: Snail: Blood, Pissed Jeans: King of Jeans

Aside from the single and tour what are the rest of the plans for Japanese Voyeurs in 2010?

RA: Album. Fun. Tour. Fun. Sleep.

Have your say...
