Templeton Pek

Templeton Pek probably aren’t the first band to achieve a lot more success in Europe and Japan before we have embraced them ourselves in the UK and they probably won’t be the last. When a band has success though they must be doing something right. Ahead of the release of their new EP at the start of April, we caught up with them to find out what the secret to their success is.

Oh and we also found out a bit of A Team trivia into the bargain as well, for anyone who hasn’t got the link already I won’t spoil the surprise…just read on!

You released No Association in three territories on its release, how did things come about for you in Europe and Japan?

It was first released in Japan and started life as a 5 track e.p. The label pushed for an album and we ended up releasing there first. We remixed it as we weren’t quite happy with the end result and then released in UK through Small town records and now finally through Long Beach Records in Europe. Each has a different colour cover and different track orders.

Have you had chance to go over and tour in Japan yet?

Not yet but we will be so we’ll let you know then.

You’ve recently played a very successful European tour, have you any stories or experiences from that you’d like to share with us?

Jagermeister seemed to be intent on killing us on that tour as wherever we went there was always a Rep there waiting for us with gifts and more Jagermeister. We got hideously drunk at the end of tour party…you can watch the aftermath on youtube somewhere it’s pretty funny. We also managed to go to an Austrian nudist spa in our underwear, because we weren’t told it was a full on nudist spa and we didn’t have any swim shorts. Typical English wandering around loads of naked Austrians in their boxers…without noticing. Apparently there were signs everywhere but we don’t speak German and just thought everyone was nude because they were Austrian.

Your UK fans aren’t missing out though, you have a tour lined up in April, what can we expect from those dates?

We’ll be playing the newest tracks for the first time so we’re keen to see how they go down…we’ll also probably be playing for longer than we usually do to fit in as many songs as we can physically play.

What about someone who has never heard you before, how would you describe Templeton Pek if you were reviewing yourselves?

A fast and energetic rock band who don’t bullshit. We are what we are, and we don’t pretend or apologise to be otherwise.

Also in April you have a new EP and album coming out, how has your sound and recording progressed from the first album?

The EP is almost a taster of where we’re heading…the two new tracks on it are the first from a batch we are demo-ing for album number two, which we’ll probably record around September. They were recorded and produced by ourselves in our own studio. There’s also stuff you can’t get on the album on there like the single ‘No Association’ with a string score behind it and a track from the original album sessions ‘The Origin’

That will be coming out through Small Town Records, what can you tell us about the label and what attracted you to them?

We haven’t got a bad word to say against them, we initially had a few offers for the album but the guys at Small Town seemed to go that extra yard for their bands and really cared…they are building a nice littler roster of good hard working bands.

Final question, how did the band name come about and does it have any special relevance?

The name comes from Dirk Benedict’s character ‘Face Man’s’ real name in The A-team. It doesn’t really have a specific meaning behind it, we are all kids of the 80’s and its just a reference to that…you’ll be surprised how many people don’t get that. I actually met him once and gave him a t-shirt…and he signed one of ours, we now have it framed in archives.

Have your say...
