The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Last year I reviewed two cracking singles by a Scandinavian band called The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. 2009 though is the year when things are really going to kick on for the band, with the re-release of the single The Sun Ain’t Shining No More on 9th March and the debut album Fruit following on 6th April.

I caught up with lead singer Mette recently to put some questions to her around what she expects from this year, how she found Never Mind The Buzzcocks and just how do you blag your first ever gig supporting Amy Winehouse in your capital cities biggest indoor venue.

An easy one to start with, where did the name come from for the band?

Our trumpet player Miloud came up with that name. He has some strange crispy ideas sometimes, and this was a name he wanted to use for a future acid jazz band, but he donated it to us for a beer and a high five. Here we go go!

Your first gig was with Amy Winehouse in the biggest venue in Copenhagen, that must have been a bit of weird situation to be thrown into, most people start off in their local pub with five men and a dog, how did it come about?

Our booking agent at that time asked us if we would like to do the support. Back then we had not rehearsed yet but we had to say yes, I mean big sold out venue, you can’t turn that down….so we played twenty minutes with out having played before and with only one and a half rehearsals of playing the songs with a band, very live he he, don’t remember anything from that concert!!

Did you get chance to chat to her?

No

Since then you’ve released a single and an EP, both of which have been really well received on our website, did you expect to get the level of support and acclaim that you’ve had for these releases so soon in your bands life?

Well thank you! I don’t know if I have had any thoughts about it, but yes you can say that, taking the fact that we have only been playing with the band one and a half years and me and Lars started writing and recording two years ago, some things have happend faster than we could wish for.

Despite having a very modern feel to the music you can also hear traces of by gone era’s that have been a potential influence such as Motown etc, is this a fair assessment and are your tastes similar?

Yes both Lars and me like soul music from one million years ago, and yes I believe you can hear that in our music. Together with everything else we have been listening to since our ears was created in the bellies of our mothers…

Apple picked up on your song and have been using it for the iPod adverts, that must have blown you away, it must feel strange knowing your music is subconsciously being pumped into millions of homes?

It’s fantastic. We got the oppertunity to get our music out to so many people, as a completely unknown band…greatness!

Mette you recently appeared on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, is that something that you have to do to promote the band or something you want to do for the experience? I guess I’m asking as the endless rounds of press must get a little tiresome (including interviews like this!)?

I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to. I’m my own boss, so beeing on NMBC was for fun/expirience/promotion…I did not know about that show before I went on it, but now I’ve seen it on the internet and think it’s great fun (glad he did not pick on me he he)!

2009 is obviously going to be a massive year for you, I presume you have an album in the pipeline and a whole lot more touring, what are your personal aspirations and expectations for next year?

It is!! I wish for all the best and all the worst ha ha – No No No!!!

I hope we will play many concerts and give a lot of people a good time. I love playing live, I get a lot of energy out and get new fresh energy in return from the audience and just playing with the others…I already think we are having a really good time let’s continue with that in 2009. Our album Fruit will be out on April the 20th.

Have your say...
