Aiden - The Cockpit, Leeds

Looking forward to seeing Brigade and Aiden we headed for The Cockpit in Leeds relatively early as there were a fair few support bands. Upon arrival we found that we weren’t on the list but got in anyway! Due to the delay unfortunately we missed Brigade and only made it in time so see Kill The Enemy starting up.

Kill The Enemy- a 5 piece band, they came on stage with not so cool green lasers flashing from their guitars but this excited the fans (the much younger ones mind!) as for their music it was catchy but more on the pop side rather than rock. However, they seemed to really excite the crowd, especially when the lead singer lifted his top up several times the girls screamed! I found it rather pointless as it wasn’t approprate with the songs in which they were playing but good for them I guess as they seemed to get good feedback from the crowd whenever this occurred.

After around 30/40 minutes of playing they left the the stage leaving the crowd more loud and vibrant. 20 minutes if that passed and before we knew it Aiden took their place on stage but began with a speech of thank you’s rather than bursting on stage with an energetic song! Not very rock n’ roll! although I can’t critisize this as they showed they couldn’t be happier than to be playing there that night which gave off a good vibe.

With a flash of strobe lightning and an uncanny evil glare from lead singer Will Francis they kicked off perhaps more energetic than expected with “Knife Blood Nightmare” which formed a moshpit instantly. Because the venue was very small the moshpit was small and encouraged a few windmill dancers from some young lads so we refrained from this one!

They put on a very energic performance throughout the night, my personal favourite was “I Set My Friends On Fire” this one formed a wall of death and we still kept out of this one! We enjoyed just watching them perform rather than jumping in the moshpit and smashing about they arent the kind of band I’d personally want to mosh to, just dancing!

Half way through the night led singer Francis demanded that we all get down on the floor-this I and MOST people did but there was a few stubborn ones who remained stood too cool to take the orders! Not sure why we were all asked to get down because when the song kicked in everybody just stood up slowly-was expected to jump up when the song kicked off but by the looks of it everyones legs had gone to sleep-including my own!

They didnt play for long, an hour and 20 minutes but they did put on a good show jumping around the stage in ecstacy with the crowd following suite. They couldn’t show their appreciation more as they paused so many times to say thank you and how happy they were to be playing here. I only realized at the end but the lead singer seemed to be sporting some lady’s knickers tied round his wrist which he was swinging around at the near end! Also a bra appeared from nowhere onto the bassists head-he didn’t seem very impressed and it completely hid his face from view! Not sure what this underwear fiasco was all about as I don’t think any fans threw them onto stage they just appearred from nowhere.

Overall. the night was an enjoyable one and the band seemed to think so too. I was rather disappointed they didn’t play their classic cover of “Die Die My Darling” as it was one of my favourites along with their cover of Billy Idols “White Wedding” but nevertheless they put on an entertaining show and it was a pleasure to be a part of. After they finished a few hanged about to get signatures but we were told to get out as they were cleaning up, this took too long so we buggered off as we felt drained enough as it was! Evidently a great night for Aiden and the crowd-I’m sure the other support bands share the same view too.

Have your say...
