Arctic Monkeys - Magna Centre, Rotherham
I realise I’m in something of a privileged position here in that I’ve seen the Arctic Monkeys three times now, this one though was always going to be a bit special with it being their home town that they were playing.
I fear though that I’m taking you too near the gig too soon, anyone who has read one of my reviews before will know that I like to waffle on a bit about my actual night out rather than just getting straight into a set list where I run through each song in a dull fashion, so stick with me here while I take you on a short journey.
The day had already got off to a decent enough start with a few beers in the pub with the lads and then watching Leeds scrape a narrow victory in their last home league game of the season against already relegated Crewe. A quick hop into town after the game to meet my companion (the Mrs) for the trip and we were on our way courtesy of British Rail.
We get to Rotherham in decent time and jump in a reasonabley priced taxi and then we are at the venue. A quick scare on the door when it first appears that my name isn’t down, only for them to check on a second list of names (success this time) and we are inside what is one of the weirdest settings for a gig. The Magna Centre is a converted former steel works, it’s quite imposing walking up to it and once inside it gets stranger as this is now a vast science museum.
One thing they certainly haven’t got right yet is the service at the bar, it’s a fairly big venue which probably holds a good three or four thousand people and they only have three people serving, the queue as you would imagine is massive. A litre of Becks later and we are pleased to see that they have changed the running order from the last time I saw them in Nottingham. As such we have just missed The Little Flames and get in position in time to see another good performance from The Reverand and The Makers.
It might be a homecoming gig for the all conquering Monkeys but they want to keep the crowd waiting, they don’t appear on stage until gone 9.30 after a 40 minute break in proceedings, the anticipation has built considerably and the atmosphere is tense with readiness for good show.

Add to favouritesThe crowd aren’t disappointed as they amble on stage and strum quickly into Riot Van….after that it’s a very similar set to the one from Nottingham the week before, they play a clutch of new songs which go down equally well with the crowd, I get Mardy Bum and she gets a spot on Dancing Shoes and before you know it its 10.50 and A Certain Romance has just come to an emphatic conclusion.
Now I mention the 10.50 time to you as not only does it tell you that they played for 1hour 20 minutes, but it also is a bit of a bummer at the time as our last train is at 10.43! Luckily the perfect day/night is completed by a passing driver and fellow Leeds fan who asks us for directions to the motorway and then proceeds to give us a lift home as he’s passing the top of my street…result….oh and don’t talk to strangers is a load of b*llocks when you get older!
