Buswell - Buy Me New Shoes

Musically a beautiful album, the band have mastered any number of different instruments from violin and viola to double bass, cello and saxophone and this in addition to the usual guitar, drums etc. The end result is a lovely blend of folk, rock, pop songs which do sound like a full orchestra is backing them.

The lyrics are incredibly sincere, soulful, heartfelt and meaningful in a traditional and modern way. They sing about life as it is from cocaine addition to love lost and even how a child feels when parents divorce. Sincerity is all good and well but it can also be a little boring, a couple of the tracks did leave me bored but the others more than made up for this.

My favourite tracks weren’t either of the two singles already released from this album Let Me Love and Don’t Go Wasting My Time (although this is very good) I really liked the opening track Barfly it’s got a lovely Celtic feel (as do most of the tracks) but the vocals, harmony’s and music were all that little bit more upbeat. I also liked The Drugs Are Making You Love purely based on the lyrics. The most moving was the title track Buy Me New Shoes which as already said is about a childs feeling when parents divorce, the blame they feel etc.

The longest title track goes to He’s Only Looking At Other Woman Because He’s Not Happy With Himself (try requesting that from a DJ after a couple of pints!) Any woman who’s worried about her boyfriend/husband ogling other woman now knows its because he’s insecure not really because he cant resist a look and thinks you haven’t noticed.

The album ends as it starts on a high note, the last track You May Climb Over Me is another good song, lovely down to earth lyrics. The whole album has the Celtic feeling to it, which is not really my thing as a rule (other than someone once bought me The Best of The Corrs, which I play occasionally – oh dear Smartie thats some confession is that!) I really liked this couldn’t listen to it all day or sing along but it is really easy listening, and does have exceptionally good lyrics.
