Club 8 - The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming
Don’t you just love and at the same time hate, the fact that there are hundreds of brilliant bands and artists out there that remain firmly embedded in the underground with several albums under there belt, yet no matter how comprehensive you consider your music knowledge and ability to explore music…you still haven’t discovered them yourself.
I say love and hate because personally I love the fact that no matter how many great bands and albums I chance upon or unearth I know I’m always going to be missing gems from my collection. I hate it though at the same time because it’s so frustrating seeing so many talented artists not getting the recognition they deserve, yet far less talented people with a certain look, a big record company or a TV programme behind them are planted into millions of homes.
I do get the feeling with some of these underrated and under exposed bands that they are happier that way, Club 8 who I am a very new fan of are one such example. The Boy Who Couldn’t Stop Dreaming is the Swedish Duos 6th album and is an absolute bundle of Scandinavian indie-pop brilliance from start to finish, yet I can’t help but think if they were appearing on Jonathan Ross, T4 and other TV programmes that they would lose their edge. It’s almost like they thrive on knowing they are brilliant, yet picked up on by a select few only.
It’s three years apparantly since their last release, I can’t comment on their previous albums at the moment but this has a real freshness to it throughout, which may be down to the length of time between albums. The vocals are beautiful from Karolina Komstedt, weaving a dreamy pop way around the instrumentation of Johan Angergard from the opening Jesus, Walk With Me to the title track that closes the album.
In between those you get nods to bands like The Concretes, St Etienne, Joy Zipper and Husky Rescue as reference points and on Heaven they move closer in sound to The Cardigans. They are though despite the bands mentioned a very individual sounding band, with a real ability to mix things up.

Add to favouritesWithin the space of a few songs you get the haunting Everything Goes, the more jangly When I Come Around and the moody Leave The North. My favourite track on here is Sometimes, a song that starts with an acoustic strum, buildiong into a shimmering track with gentle electronica.
I’m so glad that i’ve been blessed with this album, it’s really wet my appetite to hear more by a band that you can quickly love if you are one of the few to have their name whispered in your ear, or chanced upon them through some other means.
