CSS - The Cockpit, Leeds

I bought tickets for this gig on a bit of a whim a month or so ago, I’d never heard of CSS at the time, I did like Dead Disco from the single I’d bought called The Treatment (nope nothing to do with Millwall in the 80s as far as I could tell) and I was intrigued by Shut Your Eyes And I’ll Burst Into Flames as they were from Leeds and had a weird name.

My night then got off to a slightly strange start as I got shown round (I’m djing at a charity night there in a few weeks) one of the top indie clubs (Soul Circus) in Leeds by the owner and found out he was a social worker in his day job, which isn’t really two occupations you’d put together. As if that wasn’t strange enough my mate who’s only in his late twenties then turned up with a walking stick to meet me for the gig, nope not some student fashion statement he’s suffering with gout!

On to the gig at last and we get into the venue just as Shut Your Eyes And I’ll Burst Into Flames are at the end of there first song. The next twenty five minutes or so are blistering as they fuse squalling guitars and danceable basslines to produce an impressive display.

Next up are the all girl group Dead Disco. These are far from the girl next door types of The Supremes or if you want a more modern comparison The Pipettes. This is pure raunchy electro-guitar music with gorgeous girls providing equally gorgeous slabs of pop enthused tunes, Automatic and The Treatment are both known to me and are highlights but the rest of the set suggests it won’t take long for them to be joining the singles in your head.

The quality of the first two bands takes the pressure right off of the headline act from my point of view as I’ve already had more than the value of my £6 ticket, from their point of view though it can’t be easy following two local acts who have both gone down well.

By the time they come onto the stage though the room is packed and it’s clear that the crowd have on the whole come to see them. They start off in raucous fashion and the lead singer is called Lovefoxxx which tells you that she isn’t going to be a shrinking violet, in fact she’s nuts!

This helps when four or five songs into the set just as the crowd are getting into it a fuse blows and we lose sound and lights. They try to entertain the crowd during this period with various members of the band taking it in turns to improvise but it’s the lead singer who surprises herself and the crowd by stripping down to her bra and performing various dances!

Finally power is restored to the venue and the band crack on with the last few songs of their set. The momentum has been lost a little bit but it matters not when you can close with a song like Lets Make Love And Listen To Death From Above which is as genius music wise as it is in the title.

Have your say...
