Death Cab For Cutie - Leeds University

I love gigs like this, gigs that you go along to and have very little expectation of at all and they end up “knocking you bandy” as one of my namesakes once famously said on a certain TV programme.

Neither of these bands tonight though are either fools or horses but they certainly work hard enough. Viva Voce the duo from over the pond are first up and are the main reason that I’ve really come along tonight. I’ve got a couple of their EPs (think they are called Wrecking Ball and Centre Of The Universe) and I quickly fell in love with their swirling guitar sounds and hippy, floating rhythms with male/female vocals.

Live they are a much harder beast, no I don’t mean hard as in death metal but they certainly have a toughe sound live. This though is likely to be because on stage you can only do so many things at once with two people. Their sound is beefed up further on in the set by a third member appearing on stage, she quickly joins in the mood of the gig by giving it her all. At the end of their thirty odd minutes they’ve probably one themselves a smattering of new fans, its on record or in a more intimate venue though that this band really excel.

Time to grab another beer once they finish as both me and the better half have got a bit of a taste for it by this stage, we take our own advice from last time we were at this venue though and opt for shorts and mixers with ice as its the only way you can get a cold beer at this stage of the night. (Note to the venue: We pay a fortune for tickets, you charge us a fortune for cans of lager at least put some of this money towards a bit of air conditioning and some refrigeration for the beer).

When we got to the venue the crowd were queued up around the block, as I walked along the line to join the back the first thing I noticed despite the fact i’m only thirty and they’ve had five albums out (I think) is that I was clearly in the top 5% of the oldest people there, a strange feeling at a gig but sod it. I was also surprised by the venue that they were playing in as I didn’t think Death Cab For Cutie were as big as they clearly are.

They hit the stage though and within a few songs it’s clear to see why they’ve got such a loyal following. They entertain musically throughout the set, Ben Gibbards voice is even better live than on record and it looks like the Postal Service magic has sprinkled across to their new album Plans. Come the end of the set we are both converted fans, not something i’d anticipated before hand, but like football, music is full of surprises.

Have your say...
