Engerica - There Are No Happy Endings

I’ve already had a single from this album to review, which you can see elsewhere on these pages. So what are Engerica like then? Well the vocalist seems to have affected a bit of an American accent for There Are No Happy Endings, yet the band come from England.

Perhaps their songs would sound odd with any of the accents you find around the British Isles, so he decided to opt for a generic American sound – let’s face it it’s not the first time this has been done. He manages some real sore throat singing, rather impressive in parts, which will either end his career early or make his voice stronger – time will tell.

Guitar wise, the music is fairly basic throughout the album, employing the expected power chords and no real solos or complexity. These type of tunes do not really require anything too demanding from a musical point of view, however a bit of something would have been nice. Unfortunately, with music like this, it’s hard to seperate out the ryhthm section, but what you can hear is workman-like enough. More melody required.

Again, as with the single, the lyrics on the album leave a lot to be desired. It’s pretty hard to make out a song’s meaning when you know for a fact the words have just been cobbled together to make a rhyme. I mentioned the “liar cheater bogey eater/look out everybody here comes Peter” line from The Smell in my single review, now we also have track IV, Funeral Song. “I remove your sweater/turns you off, Loretta”.

Each time they’re stuck for a rhyme they seem to just shove somebody’s name in there. I’d rather read a book on Cher (can you see what I did then? It’s not difficult). Perhaps it’s supposed to be amusing – If so, I just don’t get it, I find it more sloppy than anything else.

I reckon there’s potential for this band to sound okay, they can make the right noises, but they need to think about what they are writing, both lyrically and musically, and stop making do with whatever happens to fit. There are bursts of energy in the songs, but not enough for me.

Engerica? Must Try Harder.
