Guillemots - Leeds University

Support on the night was provided by Royworld. Royworld seem to be a regular feature in Leeds having played here several times in the last few months, however since two members of the band are originally from Harrogate perhaps it chance to pop home and get the washing done?

Opening track Elasticity went down really well with many of the crowd who seemed really pleased to see them. Other strong numbers were current single release, Dust which is getting a fair amount of national airplay. An earlier release Tinman and perhaps my favourite of the set Wire. Rod Futrille has a pained and emotional singing style which while catchy can become a little monotonous after a time.

Guillemots are Fyfe Dangerfield, MC Lord Magrao, Aristazabal Hawkes and Greig Stewart, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but had quite liked the snippets I’d heard on the bands web pages.
Not really knowing the band you’re meant to be reviewing can be interesting and sometimes exciting, unfortunately tonight it was frustrating and a bit of a disappointment.

The tracks I really liked I have no idea of the song titles which is a shame. On top of that I would have to say that half the numbers were excellent and the other half mediocre not only for me but it appeared a large section of the crowd seemed uninterested as well and that’s either a fair indication of the performance or just plain rude!

For me one of the stronger tracks was Falling out of reach, the music quietened and the vocals really shine through a track really worth listening out for and since a couple of the national radio DJ seem to favour it we could have been listening to a future hit. I also really liked Annie Lets Not Wait, lots of clapping and singing along to this one, which was a single release in January 2007.

The band have a good following and possible will have success to come but this has been promised for sometime so they may be one of those unlucky bands who have all the promise but never quite get over the final hurdle. For me I will have to make a point of trying to source out some of there work before I go to see them again and it wont be a chore to do this.

Have your say...
