Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
When I heard Ricky Wilson’s vocals on the opening track (“Everyday I Love You Less and Less”) of the Kaiser Chiefs’ debut album, Employment, I immediately thought, “The Jam”. Then, in the opening bars of “I Predict A Riot”, I thought of the ‘Chilli Peppers. But it is unfair of me to compare this band to others, as I don’t think they’re like others. Maybe I’m hearing their influences, or maybe not.
The Kaiser Chiefs, all from Leeds (score 5 bonus points), name themselves after Leeds United legend Lucas Radebe’s old South African football club (score another 5 bonus points…yes you have a Leeds fan writing this, albeit of the armchair variety).
So far, the tracks released from Employment are “I Predict A Riot” and “Oh My God” and I’m sure fans everywhere are eagerly awaiting their next offering. After speaking to a few people who have been lucky enough to see the Kaiser Chiefs live, I understand these lads give a fantastic performance.
The CD cover is a work of art in itself, based on an old sytle board games compendium, and the tour T-shirts are as unique, with the legend “Everything is brilliant in Leeds” emblazoned across the front (really building up the points here).

Add to favouritesMy personal favourites from the album are “Everyday I Love You Less and Less”, “You Can Have It All”, and “What Did I Ever Give You?” If there is a weak track, I would say it’s “Team Mate”, but only because it’s slightly more restrained than the other tracks.
Employment is fun, versatile, strong, different and has personality. It’s what I’d call “a grower” and it’s grown on me. I like it.
