Lack Of Afro - My Groove Your Move
It’s only recently that i’ve started to think about the best albums released this year and then as if by magic a serious contender for album of the year comes quietly along, withouty the fanfare of a major label release, but with talent oozing from it’s every groove, it really must in with a shout of placing very highly in on our 2009 rundown at the end of the year.
The album is the second from uber talented musician and producer Adam Gibbons who goes by the name Lack Of Afro, it builds on the success of debut release Press On which featured killer funked up singles The Outsider, Touch My Soul and Sun Goes Down and pisses all over the theory that second albums are supposed to be difficult.
While the template is pretty much the same with his beats layered around funk, hip hop and soul, it’s a more cohesive album that hangs together far more consistently than the still great debut and once again showcases his talent for being able to play various instruments in the studio, on which he builds his sound.
What a sound it is too, authentic 70’s style funk that is married to a contemporary edge, this album for me puts him, up with the likes of DJ Shadow, RJD2 and Wax Tailor, if you think that’s just hype then take a listen for yourself, the fact that he’s not yet a massive name is in itself criminal.
Word is spreading though particularaly on the back of a series of inspired remixes and tracks like the funky Special Baby, Together At Last, Mo’ Filth, and the delicious organ groove of Rhythm Come Forward are all so good it hurts.

Add to favouritesOn the hip hop side of things he’s got Wax and Herbal T to help him out on International and Wax tips up again on the old school hip hop feel of Suspicious Glow. Not to be outdone, Roxie Ray delivers two brilliant female vocals on Closer To Me and the Amy Winehouse-esque Tell Me What Happens Now.
Multi talented and coming at things from all angles, it’s an album that will have you shaking, tapping and twitching various body parts wherever you choose to listen to it, an absolute must buy album from this year folks.
My Groove Your Move is out now through Freestyle Records.
