Low Life Records - Life Before 40
Low Life Records was founded in 1992 by Braintax, with the intention being that it would release the cream of independent hip hop and give artists and their voices a platform, one which was being denied them by the major labels.
This is something they’ve managed, as well as retaining the independent status that is so important to them, they’ve managed to build up an intensely loyal following that sees people clamouring to get hold of each release and the reason for that is because they don’t release rubbish and they don’t look at quantity over quality, hoping that one of the releases will be remembered out of the many. No Low Life keep the material limited and to get on the roster is a privilege.
That’s why despite being around for thirteen years now, this collection is a celebration of their 40th release (well it is actually THE 40th release but lets not split hairs here). Yep you do the maths, that’s an average of just three releases a year which really does hammer home the point that I’ve been trying to make about quality.
Life Before 40 pulls together some of the most ground breaking moments, some of the most important releases and of course some of the best. The fact that they have narrowed it down to just a third of their releases so far must have been a tough call, but it does mean you have really got the cream of the crop on here.

Add to favouritesIt opens with Braintax, an appropriate choice with all things considered, it’s a string laden Life And Breath which also features Supa T and Lewis Parker and the album also closes with an exclusive track from the head honcho as he is joined by Mystro on On The Road. In-between these tracks you get treated to Jehst, Rodney P, Task Force and Skinnyman to name just a few.
To increase the already value for money album, you’ve also got a very nice bonus mix CD, Kam taks on the mixing duties, formerly of Mr Bongo’s fame and the 3rd member of production team Beyond There. Things look set to go from strength to strength for Low Life as they’ve just relaunched the website to coincide with this release and have big albums in the pipeline from Rodney P and Braintax.
