Milburn - Well Well Well

Every now and again you have to feel really sorry for these poor hard done to rock stars don’t you. I’m not talking about the likes of Pete Docherty who seems hell bent on self destructing before we get a true glimpse of whatever genius is lurking beneath his tortured soul. I’m also not talking about the likes of Chris Martin who does all this great work for charity and political causes and releases three good albums to ever diminishing acclaim from the press.

No the type of artists(s) i’m talking about feeling sorry for are people like Milburn. Not that they go out seeking pity or sympathy mind, certainly not on this their debut long player anyway. It’s a typical “that could have been us hard luck story” that we have on our hands here, or if you were being cynical you could say they lost out to a band that pushed themselves a bit smarter into the publics ears.

The Arctic Monkeys are from the same area as Milburn, write very similar songs about Northern day to day life that you can relate to wherever you come from, they wrap them up in clever lyrics and jaunty guitars that sets your legs to ‘auto-dance’ at the local indie disco and unfortunately for our heroes of this story they got in their first with the release of I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor..the rest as they say is history.

This isn’t to say that the two bands can’t live side by side with each other and both be successful (not something the Monkeys have to worry about). Milburn have already dented the top 40 twice with Cheshire Cat Smile and Send In The Boys and this album still has a fair degree of expectation around it.

For me it doesn’t disappoint. The title track Well Well Well kicks things off in fine style and the length of the tracks (only won is over 3.35) means that not a note or lyric is wasted. It also means that you fly through the 12 tracks quite quickly and the fact that your hand is reaching straight for the play button as soon as it stops is a good sign.

The highlights for me are probably Storm In A Teacup, Send In The Boys and What You Could Have Won which is pencilled in to be the next single release. A very good album that won’t sell anywhere near as many copies as their friends from across the city, lets just hope that we can have a happy ending to this story in a few years time because Milburn have been around a few years longer than the Arctic Monkeys but you just know that people are going to label them as copyists.

Have your say...
