Primitai - Through The Gates Of Hell

This is one of them albums where Kev walked up to me smiling saying “This looks like your sort of thing.” Looking at it and from listening to it a few times I can see why he thought that.

Primitai have been around for a few years now (they’ve been going since 2003) and have already done a lot of gigging. They’re a metal band who take the music seriously, Nick Saxby plays well on lead, complemented by Graham Christie on rhythm and vocals. Christie’s singing is just what we’re after, clean enough to make out the words, but with a rough edge. The whole band seem tight, but this may be down to the production on the album. If they are as slick as this live, I could see them supporting an established band on tour.

Presentation-wise, I’m not so sure about the demon dragon with the shades on the album cover, I personally think that’s a bit naff, but lots of folk like this sort of art work, you see it on T-Shirts at gigs all over the place. Similarly from a lyrical point of view the songs are “very metal” – for example they’ve got a song called “Rockin’ in Hell” on here. One of the standout tracks is track 6 “Primitilian Man” which is a catchy number. They released this as a single in September 2007 and it did very well in the HMV rock download charts. So the band have already experienced some success, and look set to go on to bigger things, depending on which way the metal scene goes.

To sum up, then, it’s an album of fast guitar solos, solid drumming, the vocalist has a good healthy growl to him and you know where the riffs are going. The uncharitable among you could also see the predictability as a criticism, however after some of the garbage I’ve been listening to recently it’s good to hear something that sounds proper.

PRIMITAI? METAL, PURE AND SIMPLE.
