Royksopp - Sheffield Leadmill
Before I tell you the story of my visit to the Sheffield Leadmill to see Royksopp I probably need to paint a bit of a picture for you as far as gigs and me go.
A couple of years ago we bought tickets to see Super Furry animals at Leeds University. £20 a ticket nearly you are gonna be pretty keen to get in there on time to see the band aren’t you. Especially when on the ticket it says something about early show. Well with the doors opening at 7.30pm, making allowances for the support act and the messing about with equipment we decided to get up there for about quarter to nine just to be on the safe side.
So imagine our surprise when we walk in just before that time and hear the Super Furry Animals banging out one of their hits, not to worry though we’ve probably only missed half a song. Oh how wrong could we be, having checked with a fellow punter it turns out they didn’t have a support and instead had come on stage at 8.00pm!
Fast forward to Royksopp on Wednesday night and we figure we should be pretty safe to get there for around nine, it is after all a dance band we are talking about, hardly going to want a load of clubbers off their tits wandering the streets of Sheffield before chucking out time are they?
Ha ha you’re ahead of me already I can tell…..yep turns out that while hardly taking it to SFA levels Royksopp are early birds too. Now it might have warned us on the ticket had it not been for the fact that this was a guest list job, so we didn’t even have that as an indicator. It’s ten years since I’ve been a student but I should have realised, Wednesday night is the main student night up and down the country and with the Leadmill being slap bang in the middle of all the halls they were gonna want people out early to get on with the club night for the students.
Anyway, we arrive and find they are just starting to play the ever fantastic ‘Remind Me’, it’s a cracking version, possibly even better live than it is on record. The atmosphere seems really good in the near full venue and the duo have gone all Kraftwerk on our asses with the outfits, its red shirts and black ties all the way a la Man Machine. Although they don’t say much between tracks they clearly seem to be enjoying themselves.

Add to favouritesThe remainder of the set is just as much of a joy, shame it isn’t a Saturday night for us to fully enjoy ourselves obviously, but even for a midweek gig the party is in full swing. Sparks is toughened up live and they finish with a rousing Poor Leno that brings the house down, the majority of the set though is as you would expect plucked from the latest album The Understanding with the recent single Only This Moment being the crowds favourite.
Fortunately for us late comers they do a deserved encore and treat us to a mental acid tweaking track followed by a Royksopp mash up of Poor Leno and Remind Me (if my memory serves me right, it’s getting worse as I get older!) which is pretty damn good and works really well together.
After that we are onto the cheap bottles of lager and bad student dancing before a quick trip home up the M1. Definitely a band worth checking out live, someone I’d love to see on a Friday or a Saturday night as they clearly have the ability to work a crowd and make the beats heavier and dancier than on vinyl.
