Scouting For Girls - Leeds University

Go:Audio a four piece consisting of James Matthews (Vocals), Josh Wilkinson (Keyboard & Synths), Zack Wilkinson (Guitar), and Andy Booth (Drums) opened the night and since I hadn’t heard of them before wasn’t really sure what to expect from this band. But I knew I was in for a treat when I noticed that the keyboard player Josh looked like Tubes from soccer AM!

These lads really were a pleasant shock for me; I didn’t expect them to be as good as they were. With two stand out tracks Forget About It and the newest single Made Up Stories. These guys really interacted with the crowd too, it was like they’d been in the music business for a long time. I do think that the music world should watch out for Go:Audio because based on what we saw tonight these guys aren’t destined to be a support band for long.

The Second support act for the night was Clocks, another four piece all from Surrey, Tom Hewitt (Lead Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards), Ed Hilliam (Vocals, Lead Guitar), Rich Farris (Drums, Vocals) and John Ricketts (Bass). To say that Clocks were the more established of the two support acts I have to say I wasn’t as pleased with them as I was with Go:Audio. Tom(vocalist) didn’t really get the crowd involved and their performance on a whole was quite flat with only one song really standing out from the rest which was That Much Better, but if these lads are expecting to carry on supporting bands such as Scouting For Girls Tom Hewitt needs to work on his interaction with the crowd.

Last on stage but most definitely not least, Scouting for Girls. Led out by Roy Stride, I was in the mind set to find as many flaws in their performance as I could because as we all know, they don’t have many! Roy introduced the band then went on to say that this was his first gig back from losing his voice, so I didn’t expect the best performance ever from the amazing vocalist, but as ever he did not disappoint.

I cannot pick out any faults from this band; they have the look, the charisma and most importantly the sound. They proved this endless times on the night with every song they just got better. So picking out only a few of their standout tracks was a task in itself. I managed to narrow their best songs of the night into a top three so… coming in at number three, The Mountains of Navaho, Roy involved everyone in on this one, and the way that he can get the crowd jumping to anything is amazing.

In at number two was the song that they closed the night on She’s So Lovely, this one was always bound to be a big hit at the gigs as it was the song that shot them into the limelight. Finally the best song of the night was one that isn’t even originally by Scouting For Girls and only Roy was left on stage, the song was, Nobody Does It Better, originally by Carly Simon, this was fitting for the best song of the night because in my opinion nobody does it better than Scouting For Girls!

The gig on a whole was good but perhaps if Clocks had been on first then Go:Audio then Scouting for Girls the gig would have had a better overall feel to it. Go:Audio’s newest single Made Up Stories is out on the 26th of May and I strongly recommend going out and buying it! Or at least get on their myspace site and give them a listen.
