Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone
Slipknot are back with their fourth album-arguably more experimental than the previous ones. They didnt actually record this until February 2008, very impressive as it is without a doubt winning my vote as album of the year! The album kicks off heavy as expected-frst track ‘Gematria (The Killing Name)’ sounds very much like ‘People=Shit’ only with more break downs.
I think Slipknots latest masks have caused more babble than the release of the album! Even though there arent major changes to the masks-with the exception of Joeys who’s is probably the most terrifying! They still grab their fans attention when their masks change. There masks are a visual representation of how their music makes them feel and are also to draw fans attention away from their appearance and to focus on ther music more. As I’m sure we can all agree every band out there has a fan base who pick who they fancy the most rather than focussing mainly on the music. I think this is both clever and creative.
‘Psychosocial’ the first song that was released from the album is probably a favourite of mine it is definately one of the heaviest and somewhat more catchy than others along with ‘Vendetta’. ‘All Hope Is Gone’ explosively lashes out on subjects such as scene kids and Vietnam war protestors. The second half of the album delves into a much more relaxed state-I’d rather they have remained as heavy as they started as I think its what they do best. ’
Snuff’ is my least favourite, its far too slow and not very Slipknot at all! As always Coreys vocals are strong hard hitting and very distinguishable however, the track ‘Gehenna’ some notes appear to go too high and does not sound as if it belongs to Corys! Best stick to hitting them notes in his more toned down side band ‘Stone Sour’. Overall Slipknot have created a masterpiece of an album!
Fair enough the second half of the album isnt as heavy as preferred but the first half makes up for it with incredibly heavy tracks. Proving they are experimenting more alittle with this album. Its also fair to say Joeys drumming skills are amazing and they quite rightly pulled out of Leeds Fest this year (who could ever replace Joey?!).

Add to favouritesThey are touring Europe with ‘Machine Head’ and ‘Children Of Bodom’ at the end of this year-certainly not a band to be missed and the same can be said about ‘Machine Head’ Unfortunately the same doesnt apply to ‘COB’! I have now bought a ticket to see these in December and I know they will put on a mind blowing performance!
‘All Hope Is Gone’ is released on 24th August 2008 via Roadrunner Records.
